So, what is Hypnobirthing really about?

Growing up we're fed the dream to fall in love, marry and have kids, cheers Disney! That's kind of what I had in mind, but there was one huge hurdle.
As strong as my desire was to have a family, it was rivalled with my fear of giving birth. I absolutely dreaded it. How the hell would I push a human being out of me?!
It was a classic case of social conditioning; growing up to the horrific stories of my mother's traumatic births, watching painful births depicted in film and TV, and ofcourse the horror stories in the media, let's face it - it's rarely happy news.
So when I found myself pregnant I was overjoyed, but buried my head in the sand when it came to childbirth. Then one day, it all changed.
It was a dark damp morning in January 2015, I couldn't sleep and found myself on the internet in the wee hours. By chance, I came across Hypnobirthing. Curious, I read and researched more, and within half an hour was booked onto a local course. It was the best pregnancy purchase I ever made, by a long shot!
A few weeks later my husband and I were on the course and it all just clicked, made sense, soothing all my anxieties and fears. By the time the course was over I remember thinking: "I don't even care how I have this baby, I'm fearless." Ballsy right?!
And this is the thing...Hypnobirthing can change your mindset on such a deep level that you actually feel pretty powerful. It doesn't promise a pain-free birth and it doesn't promise you a certain outcome, but it can totally empower in so many ways.
What it does is arm you with unfound confidence, understanding and knowledge on what the hell is happening in your body as a pregnant person, how to use things to your advantage, ask the right questions and ultimately control the controllables.
Now I’m no earth mother; I don’t dance around trees or burn incense sticks. I am just a woman who is always up for a challenge and embraces anything, including hypnobirthing. I really threw myself into it.
Let’s face it, reading a book and practising a couple of times at home doesn’t really cut it. You need to fully immerse into a course as a couple, take home what you’ve learnt, and integrate it into your everyday life. And that's what we did.
