Hypnobirthing is for C-sections too...

New mother sharing a tender skin-to-skin moment with her newborn, embodying empowerment and calmness from hypnobirthing preparation

If I had a dirham for every time a pregnant mum says "I can't do Hypnobirthing I'm having a caesarean", I swear, I'd be a very rich girl!

The biggest misunderstanding of hypnobirthing is that it is for women wanting a natural, pain-free, birth.

No! No! No!!!

Hypnobirthing and Birth Preparation courses are for ALL births, all couples and all cultures. Why?

Rather than focusing on a particular outcome, birthing our baby this way or that way, what we actually do together is focus on a particular mindset.

I want you to go into birth educated. I want you to know what interventions may occur, what they mean, what questions to ask, how to explore your options and make informed choices.

When you do this, you maintain a sense of control, and when you maintain a sense of control, you're likely to feel much more positive about your birth experience. Even, yes even, if it doesn't go to plan!

As a Birth Educator, my focus is not how you birth. You can have a c-section, water birth, forceps, whatever. My focus is how you feel about your birth.

On my workshops I teach you signs for labour and what to do, breathing techniques, exactly how to maintain control and your human rights in the birthing room.

These elements are the same, no matter what path your birthing takes!

I know hypnobirthing conjures the image of women with their eyes closed in a birthing pool, and yes, many do birth like that. But really, hypnobirthing is about empowerment.

So if you're having a scheduled C-section and think that's it, all plans are out the window, think again.

There are so many ways you can personalise your Csection. You can explore a gentle Csection, look at ways to involve your birth partner, brainstorm how to make the Birth Environment more comfortable for you, even in theatre.

Infact, I encourage all my couples to have a Csection Birth Plan. Being ready for any twists and turns and having the confidence to trust your instincts, ask questions and make informed decisions.

Don't "go with the flow" when it comes to your birth. This is the biggest day of your life, do you really want to leave it to luck or else, leave your body and baby to be someone else's decision?

Go into it informed, educated and empowered. Be calm, confident and equipped with the tools for a positive experience that will stay with you not just throughout your birth and early motherhood, but for the rest of your life.

Growing up we're fed the dream to fall in love, marry and have kids, cheers Disney! That's kind of what I had in mind, but there was one huge hurdle.

"Wow, I'm definitely going to Hypnobirth my babies!" These were the first words to leave the student midwife's mouth as I cradled my new baby boy.
